The Story of My Son’s 20-Minute Birth

Being Mama/ Postpartum/ Pregnancy

The only thing to expect in birthing is the unexpected. It’s one of those events where you need to prepare yourself as best you can for the outcome you’d like while also knowing that it may not go as planned. My plan for a natural birth with my daughter turned into an early induction loaded with hospital interventions. My son’s birth? It happened naturally and took just 20 minutes. Seriously. This is the story of River’s birth. Read more

What They Don’t Teach in Birthing Classes: 7 Tips to Read Before You Deliver

Being Mama/ Pregnancy

You’ve prepped baby’s bed, the car seat’s in the car and your hospital bag is packed (or birthing pool is set up at home). Everything is ready for when baby is born . . . but are you? One of the most important things that parents-to-be don’t learn in birth education classes is to expect the unexpected. Even if you have all the items you’re told you’ll need when baby arrives you could not be ready. Becoming a parent adds a whole new dimension to a person emotionally, physically and psychologically — you won’t be the same. 3 Tips for Art Nouveau Maternity Photos

Being Mama/ Life/ Pregnancy

What’s your favorite part of pregnancy? For some it might be the ability to eat more of something they love because, hey, cravings. Others enjoy the hormone changes and embrace just everything preggo. Me? I really, really look forward to the maternity photos (OK yes, and giving into the cravings haha). Maternity photos are super important for moms to get just one day where they can feel and look like the birthing goddess they are. So many moms – Especially second kiddo and beyond – feel just kinda blah about themselves during pregnancy and these photos are a chance to shine, a chance to have something that shows your pregnancy. So why not have fun with them? I went with a sort of art nouveau photoshoot since I love that theme (my wedding was also art nouveau). Keep reading to see all the pics and grab some tips for your own art nouveau maternity photos! Read more

6 Common Misconceptions About Home Birth

Being Mama/ Pregnancy

Home birth was the last thing on my radar at the beginning of my pregnancy — my prenatal care was through a hospital birthing center. But when we moved to another state for my husband’s new job I was 37 weeks pregnant and none of the birthing centers or hospitals within an hour of our new home would take me so late in pregnancy. In tears and desperation, I Google searched “home birth midwives.” Finally, I found a practice that would take my case! Five days after moving, our daughter was born at home. Home births are now rising in popularity but still remain shrouded in misconception. Can you guess the most common misconceptions people have? Here are six. Read more
