I’m not an extreme couponer, but I am an extreme discounter. I don’t clip coupons from the paper because I don’t get a newspaper and I don’t typically purchase a lot of the brands that offer those coupons. Instead, I use discount apps, discount codes and look for all available deals I can find. One of the newest savings apps I’ve learned about allows you to pass savings from one user to another using a ripple effect, instantly. About 8 years ago my cousins visited for Thanksgiving and we all headed out to shop at a nearby outlet center on Black Friday. My mom, sister and I have continued this shopping tradition, but we haven’t been able to see my cousins on Thanksgiving weekend since . . . until this Thanksgiving weekend. Just as I was considering an impromptu visit to my cousins in Southern California, they told me that they planned to drive up on Black Friday for a visit! Normally when we all drive down to my cousins’ homes or they drive up to see us we spend a lot of time calling and texting one another to get location updates but since they planned to travel on Black Friday (while the rest of us would be busy shopping) we looked for some handy alternatives and found an app called Life360. (It’s a free app available for Android, Windows and Apple/ios products that helps families and friends stay connected.) Read more
Not all parents have a lot of things in common — even if they have the same child rearing philosophies — but one thing most parents agree on no matter their chosen form of upbringing is saving money to cut down on bills and make each pay check go a bit further. As long as you plan out your targets and put your mind to saving, it’s easily done, and well worth it (without cutting a bunch of paper coupons, even)! Remember when garage sales were the only way to get money for great outgrown items? Then Criagslist and consignment sales became popular . . . but even with those you could end up waiting a while for a buyer, or not get quite as much as you were hoping. So Facebook members started buy/sell/trade groups for local areas, and that worked OK for some members but not others (see 40 Signs You Might Be a BST Admin). Avoid the shortchanges, last-minute flakes and time wasters with some of these newer alternatives — all available as apps on your phone! Keep reading for 6 apps you’ll want to download today. Speck recently released the DuraFolio ($60) and ShowFolio ($70). I attended an unveiling event, where I got to check them out at the Speck Store in Palo Alto, then take them for a test drive at home. As a parent, I really like these products for different reasons, and can justify owning both — one for travel, and one for home. Read more
Having a hard time convincing the kids that Santa is real? There’s an app for that! Zulu Alpha Kilo Inc.‘s Kringl app allows you to select one of several Santa scenes to record with settings from your own home. Choose a scene, your setting, adjust the size and visibility of Santa to match your setting, then “record.” The result is a fantastic video you can then save to your camera or share on social networks. It’s a lot of fun for parents, and magical for kids.
Another reason I love this app? It’s free to download on Apple or android devices. Plus, Kringl allows users the option of donating to Make a Wish Foundation, making it an app that truly benefits children everywhere.
I just downloaded Kringl to try it out after learning about it on the Fast Company website, and I’m really glad I did. My little girl is going to be over the moon when I show her the videos I made, and I’m pretty excited about that. To read The Fast Company’s interview with Kringle’s creator, or how the app was created for creative charity and social change, click here.
