After looking through Tinkerlab: A Hands-On Guide For Little Inventors I’d like to feature all of the neat experiments and craft ideas on Savvy Every Day. but I only have permission to share one with you, so I’m sharing the Naked Egg experiment from page 164. By covering an egg in vinegar and letting it sit for 24-72 hours, the egg peels itself and becomes almost rubber-like to the touch to the point that it can bounce a little bit!
This experiment is a great way to introduce to scientific experimentation, study discussion, creating a hypothesis, and drawing a conclusion with your little one. Because it’s a simple experiment with very visual and textile results it’s a fantastic first project for toddlers and preschoolers who want to participate in the experiment process.
- A glass jar (I used an empty pickle jar)
- A raw egg
1. Have your child pick an egg and gently place it in the jar (we sort of rolled ours in).
2. Help your little one pour vinegar over the egg until the vinegar level reaches just above the egg. (The first time I tried this I didn’t put enough vinegar in.)
3. Add a dash of salt then close the lid.
4. Talk with your child about what might happen to the egg.
5. Observe the changes in your egg as time passes.
6. After 24-72 hours the shell should be pretty much gone and you’ll be about to pour out the vinegar. Let your child talk about how the egg might feel before they actually hold it.
7. Gently hold the egg and lightly bounce it (with towels ready) on a clear kitchen surface. Amazing, right?
I hope that you and your little(s) enjoy this fun experiment from Tinkerlab! (My daughter really liked it but didn’t want to touch the egg.) The next Tinkerlab experiment on my list is butter making — I can’t wait! I used to do this project when I was in kindergarten so it will be fun to share it with S. Happy experimenting!
